Independent living for over 60s at Fortune Place, Edinburgh

Fortune Place in South Edinburgh is the future of affordable housing for people over the age of 60. The award winning flats are designed to cater for different and changing needs to enable people live at home contently for as long as possible. The flats allow care to come to you, should you ever need it and we have incorporated dementia friendly design features to future proof the flats.

But what makes Fortune Place so special and different is it's a community. We have created space for people to share, encouraging people to converse, socialise and feel part of a community. The added bonus of the beautiful garden spaces also encourages outdoor activities. The tenants can use or learn gardening skills with the help of our therapeutic gardener, whilst making the garden their own. We benefited from Big Lottery funding which gave us a member of staff to develop this new community and to introduce and manage a diverse programme of activities. The Garden Room gives people at Fortune Place a tailor made space to join their neighbours at the activities which so far include Tai Chi classes, art therapy, digital skills and Zumba. Charlotte supported tenants to get involved in these activities and made sure everyone had a say in what goes on. Her goal was to reduce social isolation, keep people physically and socially active and improve their health and wellbeing.

There are 54 bright flats with a choice of 1 or 2 bedrooms and double sized showers or wet rooms. There is lift access to the wheelchair adapted homes which are not restricted to ground floors as you might find in other developments. All flats benefit from installed WIFI so tenants are online from the moment they move in. Each flat has either a private balcony or patio and there are two large enclosed and secure shared gardens. With only 2 or 3 other flats in most stairs neighbours know each other and feel safe and secure. Pets are welcome and there's convenient direct access to the local park for dog walkers.

Tenants benefit from an onsite concierge Monday-Friday; Robert tends the communal areas and is on hand to help out with odd jobs that tenants may need in their homes.
