Social Rent

We advertise and allocate homes for social rent in Edinburgh through EH Your Key to Choice. This is a 'choice based lettings system' called EdIndex. Anyone aged 16 or over can register and apply for housing and applicants with a housing need are awarded with priority giving them a greater chance of being made an offer of housing. A range of social landlords, including the Council use EdIndex so you only have to register once.

You need to register with EdIndex before you can bid for our properties. You can get an application form by:

When your form is processed and you get your EdIndex reference number (usually after two weeks) you can start to express interest in suitable properties. Log on weekly to Key to Choice to find available properties or phone the EdIndex team at the City of Edinburgh Council on 0131 529 5080.

When you apply for a property that you are interested in, this is called placing a bid. It is important that you only bid for properties that meet your needs, are the appropriate size for your household and are in an area you want to live. Our adverts run for one week. Adverts close and new adverts start at 3.30pm on a Friday and you can apply for up to three properties a week. Social housing is in high demand in Scotland so it is not possible to say how long it will take from registering to being made an offer.

When a property advert ends we receive a list of everyone who has placed a bid, sorted in order of the applicants' priority. We offer the property to the first suitable applicant on the list.
